Dr. Amia Huang, PsyD

Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Oregon (telehealth only)

Hello! I’m Amia Huang, and I’m a second-generation Chinese American who grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Washington and my doctoral degree at Pacific University.

In my graduate training, I worked with children, teens, and adults from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in community mental health, hospitals, and primary care settings throughout Oregon (Portland, Hillsboro, Gresham) and California (Long Beach, San Pedro). I was trained in psychological assessment for neurodevelopmental diagnoses (i.e., ASD, ADHD). I became a licensed psychologist in 2020.

Through my experiences, I’ve learned that helping clients understand how various systems shape their lives is a crucial step in their personal growth. We live in a complex world, and many factors are beyond our control. However, by identifying what we can influence and learning to navigate the uncertainty of what we can’t, we gain the tools to improve our lives. Therapy helps us recognize what’s in our control, and then use that understanding to transform the way we treat ourselves and connect with others.

Therapeutic Approach

I work from a humanistic (also known as client-centered or Rogerian) perspective. This means that our relationship is a key factor in the healing process: how we engage with each other can be just as impactful as what we talk about. I believe we are all naturally driven towards growth under the right conditions, and change happens when we feel emotionally safe, understood, and respected. Safety is even more important when we are processing traumatic events. I understand that every therapeutic approach needs to be adapted to fit the needs of the individual. Your goals and your pace drive our therapy - we work together to determine the right time for skills and the right time for processing. I also incorporate aspects of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) as needed. I welcome clients of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and identities.

I also work from a neurodivergent-affirming and autism-affirming perspective. As a neurodivergent (ND) psychologist, I understand how important it is to have a space where divergent traits are treated with respect. I believe there is no right or wrong way for your brain to work, and that neurodivergence is not a disorder. In therapy, we work towards understanding and affirming the type of brain you have (i.e., neurotype). When our traits are disabling, we work to find the right supports and accommodations.

I work with adults to manage ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, trauma, concerns specific to race/ethnicity-related experiences, and significant life transitions and losses. I also welcome those who want to explore possible neurodivergent traits and identity.
